This grant-based project was led by two pediatric gastroenterologists with the goal of educating healthcare providers and patients and families about blood clot prevention. The materials we created filled a gap for blood clot prevention in children and adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Together we built a multi-module course for healthcare providers leveraging animated videos, quizzes, and informational handouts to support learning. The course was designed to fulfill Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for healthcare providers.
The project SMEs wanted informational handouts that healthcare providers could easily download and reference or provide to patients and families. I used Adobe Express to create the handouts and created cohesion through color (purple) and the circle icon motif that is carried throughout all three handouts. The first two handouts target healthcare providers, requiring more densly-packed text. I used bold headers, white space, and color blocking to chunk the text and draw attention to key elements. The far right handout was designed for patients and families, so I purposefully reduced text and added more images and colors for visual interest and appeal. I ran the original SME text through AI (Microsoft Co-pilot) to enhance readability and and reduce word count. I used Adobe Stock and Illustrator to select and customize vector image colors to complement the purple color scheme.
One learning objective for course was to understand the pathophysiology of blood clot formation. I was tasked with creating a brief animated video that shows how blood clots form, which is described by a phenomenon called Virchow's Triad. I used Vyond.com along with several customized illustrations developed in Adobe Illustrator to create the video. I enjoyed the challenge of illustrating blood clots forming within veins.
The educational materials walked healthcare providers through some complex procedures related to blood clot risk screening and care plans. I suggested making the content more approachable through a case presentation of a patient with IBD. The SMEs re-wrote the content around a teenaged-patient named Alex. This allowed for a more interesting and comprehensible video.
"I had the pleasure of working with Jackie on a web-based educational curriculum. Jackie’s excellence was apparent from the start; she was prompt and responsive in communications, kept detailed notes on project progress and tasks, completed work efficiently, and was simply a great team member. She translated our educational content into a visually attractive, engaging curriculum for the adult learner. I hope we get to work together in the future!"
