The aim of this project was to standardize Quality Improvement (QI) instructional materials to be used a la carte throughout The Ohio State University's College of Medicine and Wexner Medical Center. My role was to develop a series of animated and talking head videos on twenty different QI topics that would work for a variety of audiences including medical students, residents, faculty, and direct and indirect care hospital staff. The artifacts displayed here are focused on the topic: The History of Evidence Based Practice in Healthcare.
This color palette was inspired by an SME-provided slide deck. It prominently featured the dark blue color in the middle of the band. I plugged the color into Coolors.co and chose the four colors to the right of the dark blue. I added the black and grey options because of the flat character style feature in the right image. The grays allowed me to highlight certain characters and ideas while drawing attention away from others.
I used the same dark blue color above as a backdrop for the QI Hub logo: a red silhouette of Ohio with a circle and line design. I used video animation software, Vyond.com, to create a dynamic logo of the intro and outro video bumpers. The bumpers and color palette lent cohesion across all videos without the repository.
The subject matter expert shared existing course lectures she had created for her graduate students using Zoom and a slide deck. She wanted the videos to portray the same content in a more dynamic and visually engaging format. I choose three illustration styles for graphics within the video: line drawings, sketches, and flat vector graphics, all sourced from Adobe Stock and uploaded to Vyond.com. I used Illustrator and PowerPoint to change the colors of the illustrations to match the color palette. The mixture of the three styles added interest without being overwhelming. Additionally, I matched object movement on the screen with the action word being spoken in the script to strengthen the message, almost like a visual onomatopoeia. For example, during a part of the script about a evidence based practice not taking hold "overnight," a moon moves in an arch across the top of the screen from right to left. A clock slides down the screen when the narrator discusses reducing time, and so on. Finally, I used visual metaphors to convey abstract concepts rather than relying on on-screen text. When discussing a broken healthcare system, I added cracks to the walls of a hospital. These techniques allowed me to build three cohesive videos the clearly communicate the story of evidence-based healthcare.
"We have been working with Jackie on our QI Hub project. For this project we tasked with creating accessible content to share with participating QI Hub sites to help them better understand the quality improvement process and associated tools. Jackie has been incredibly professional, organized, and effective at bringing the videos and templates into fruition. At each step she has helped guide us in making decisions that would help ensure learners understood the content being covered. Additionally, her videos have been creative and well done bringing a professional polish that is way above and beyond what we could have ever done without her talent, expertise, and leadership."
